Lehmann&Voss&Co. has recently started marketing a new class of environmentally friendly fillers with a platelet-like structure which have a positive influence on gas impermeability compared with typical fillers such as CaCO3 and carbon black. The LUVOMAXX® CF products consist of naturally occurring carbon together with cryptocrystalline silica. Consequently, they are not subject to the REACh regulations and also exhibit very good CO2 emission figures.

Another positive attribute of the LUVOMAXX® CF types is a specific density of 1.3 to 1.7 g/cm³. Compared with other mineral fillers or carbon blacks, which have considerably higher densities, LUVOMAXX® CF can thus help to significantly reduce mixing costs.

LUVOMAXX® CF permits very good and low-dust dispersibility in both natural and synthetic rubbers. When used in combination with carbon black, the LUVOMAXX® CF types can be used as an internal dispersing aid to improve the distribution of the carbon black. The positive impact on the flow properties of the compound and the good extrusion properties additionally lead to smoother surfaces.

A key feature of LUVOMAXX® CF is the platelet structure with an average particle size of 3.5 – 6.5 µm. This is able to significantly increase the gas impermeability of air-conveying components such as inner liners for tyres as well as hoses and gaskets. The morphology of LUVOMAXX® CF is also suitable for reducing the dynamic properties of vulcanized rubbers such as internal friction. A reduction in internal friction brings about a corresponding lowering of material fatigue in components subjected to dynamic influences.

These characteristics have already been positively tested in the areas of application for tyre inner liners as well as in moulded and injection moulded parts.
